Soy Milk, Soy Drink, or Soy Beverage: What Is the Difference?

Whether it is called soy milk, soy drink, or soy beverage, they are essentially the same beverage. These terms are used interchangeably across different cultural contexts, and their nutritional value remains identical.

According to the National Standards (CNS), the legal classification is divided into two categories: "Soy Milk" and "Mixed Soy Milk."

·         Soy Milk: A milky beverage made from processed soybeans with a protein content of 2.6% or higher.

·         Mixed Soy Milk: Must contain at least 50% soy milk with a protein content of 2% or higher.

For soybean food producers, maintaining consistency and standardized processes is the key market threshold as demand rises. Insufficient heating or incomplete grinding leads to lower protein extraction rates, inconsistent concentration, and an unpleasant "raw" beany taste. Modern soybean processing systems now feature multi-stage precision control.

The fully automated Tofu Machinery Artisan No.1 Soymilk Machine integrates grinding and cooking processes into a unified system, establishing a stable and repeatable soymilk production workflow. Through precision grinding and controlled cooking, soybean proteins are effectively extracted, while the optimized process enables natural production without the use of defoaming agents. Equipped with one-touch operation and a fully automated control system, the machine reduces training requirements and operational errors, ensuring continuous production and batch-to-batch consistency. This allows producers to scale up capacity while maintaining stable product quality.

Recently, we hosted our 65th Anniversary and Spring Banquet, welcoming global partners from around the world to witness the continuous evolution of TATI’s soybean food equipment technology. For decades, TATI has cultivated the industry with the professional image of a Tofu Machinery Artisan. With 65 years of expertise, we ensure that every simple cup of soy milk is backed by stable and precise technical support.

Q1: Are soy milk and soy drink the same?

According to CNS standards, "Soy Milk" refers to a soy-based milky beverage with a protein content of at least 2.6%.

Q2: Why do some soy milk products display numbers on the label?
The numbers represent the grams of protein contained in every 100 ml of the beverage. According to Taiwan’s CNS standards, qualified soy milk must contain at least 2.6% crude protein. In the market, standard concentrations are typically around 7%–9%, while concentrated soy milk can reach 10% or higher, making it particularly suitable for fitness enthusiasts or consumers seeking higher protein intake.

Q3: Why are some soy milk products more expensive while others are cheaper?
The price of soy milk is mainly influenced by the soybean ratio, protein concentration, and production technology. Higher soybean content and greater protein extraction rates require more raw materials and stricter processing control. In addition, stable grinding and cooking processes help ensure higher concentration and consistent quality, which may result in a higher product price.
